They’re tiny. They’re tireless. And they’d leave you in the dust.
You’ve seen them on the sidewalk. Maybe in your kitchen. That tiny little creature marching along with what appears to be absolutely no urgency whatsoever. Slow. Methodical. Almost leisurely.
Don’t be fooled.
Relative to its body length, the common ant is one of the fastest creatures on the planet. And when you do the math — scaling ant speed up to human proportions — the results are genuinely humbling.

The average ant is about 1–2 millimeters long and travels at roughly 1.5 kilometers per hour — about one mile per hour. That doesn’t sound impressive until you account for scale.
An ant moving at 1 mph covers approximately 300 body lengths per second. A six-foot human moving at the same relative rate would be traveling at roughly 61 miles per hour — highway speed, on foot, without breaking a sweat.
Perfectly reasonable. About three miles per hour. A nice afternoon stroll.
3 mph. Completely unimpressive by ant standards.
Scaled to body length, of course. You may want to step aside.
61 mph. The ant considers this perfectly normal.
It gets worse. Ants can carry 10 to 50 times their own body weight — the rough equivalent of a human carrying a mid-sized car. They do this all day. In the heat. Without complaining. Without a union.
There are an estimated 20 quadrillion ants on Earth. That’s 20,000,000,000,000,000 — roughly 2.5 million ants for every human being alive today. Their combined biomass is estimated to exceed that of all wild birds and mammals on the planet combined.
The next time one of them wanders across your picnic blanket, consider showing a little respect. You are in the presence of one of nature’s most astonishing engineering achievements — and it is quietly judging your walking speed.
The ant does not know it is remarkable.
That might be the most remarkable thing about it.
