Anybody But You

Driving through New Ulm with a friend cruisin' round

Saw a girl on a porch swing down on Broadway Street

Hot pants, yellow tank top, wavin' at the boys

Looking like she's waiting for a fella to meet

My friend said, “Let's stop the car, and give her a ride!”

I said, “Man, she ain't lookin' my way.

I hear she's runnin' with some guy named Tranny on the side.

She ain't my kind of girl, and that's no lie.”

Couple years went by, I'd moved up to the city

Playin' keys and guitar, gettin' kinda busy

My buddy says, “I got a gig, it's out of town.

My sister's graduatin', can ya come on down?”

Drove back to New Ulm, and there she stood

Same girl from the porch, and she's looking real good

With that big laugh, bigger mouth, and a skirt too short

I picked up my guitar and I sang what I felt

My buddy leaned in close and said, “She likes you, I can tell.

Go on and ask her for a date.”

I said, “Man, she's just too much, too loud, and she speaks her mind.

I want a quiet girl, and I'm willing to wait.”

Well, that ain't how the story went, you've probably guessed by now

Forty-four years down the road and I'm still figurin' out how

Two kids, three grandkids and a house that's gettin' lonely

I'm still up here with this guitar in my hands

But the song I'm singin' now tells a different story

And it ain't the one that I began, singin'
