Self-Deportation?
Stay in the U.S. and Move to Sanctuary Cities!
hr700

Entering Mexico without proper documentation is treated as an administrative immigration violation under the current Migration Law, not a regular crime, and the main consequences are detention, fines, and deportation with a possible future re-entry ban. This does not sound much different from the laws and policies that the Trump administration are trying to enforce. Why are people so quick to criticize the United States for using "detention, fines, and deportation with a possible future re-entry ban" to return Mexican citizens to their home country?

Perhaps ICE and federal officials should encourage illegal immigrants to self-deport to U.S. "sanctuary cities", rather than requiring them to leave the United States or having them forcibly removed to their country of origin. Hand them their $1,000 and bus them to Minneapolis!

How would Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz or Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey respond to a sudden influx of illegal immigrants into their state requiring housing, jobs, schools, financial assistance, SNAP benefits, transportation, and welfare support?

Mayor Frey regularly describes immigrants, including those without legal status, as "neighbors" and emphasizes that Minneapolis should be a place they can safely call home. He has publicly pledged to "stand with" immigrant communities and has framed federal efforts to force local cooperation with immigration enforcement as fear-based attacks on Minneapolis' values. If Mayor Frey wants to welcome illegal immigrants as "neighbors", let's start bringing them all to Minneapolis!

"Mayor Jacob Frey signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal, state, and local agencies from using any City-owned parking lots, ramps, garages, or vacant lots to stage civil immigration enforcement operations. The order also directs City staff to design a signage template for local businesses and property owners who want to show their support for immigrants and mark their property as off-limits for these activities.

The mayor's order comes after recent credible media reports outlining the Trump administration's plans to target Somali immigrants in the Twin Cities. The mayor has been clear: Minneapolis will not waver in its commitment to protect the rights and safety of all people, regardless of immigration status.

A Welcoming City

This Executive Order builds on the City of Minneapolis's work to make sure Minneapolis is a welcoming place for all, regardless of immigration status."
