I recently acquired an interesting new piece of furniture, called the SolTec Lounge Chair.

The SolTec Lounge Chair

Over the past few years I had a couple of chances to experience this unique device: once at a private session, and once at a public seminar where a dozen or so units were set up to demonstrate what the SolTec chair is all about.

How It Works

Sound Layered, amplified music made for the chair
Vibration Transducers turn the music into vibration you feel
Magnetic field Placed to work with the body’s energy system

Here is how SolTec describes it:

The Chair

The chair’s technology provides layered, amplified music, played through transducers that create synchronized sound and vibration. A strategically placed magnetic field then affects the central nervous and human energy system. With practice, the result for the user can be an experience of a highly spiritual nature. With regular use, one can learn to tap into these frequencies of higher consciousness more consistently, resulting in a greater sense of peace and certainty in our daily lives.

Vibrational Healing

It’s called “vibrational healing.” The chair plays specially designed audio files that create varying sounds and vibrations, meant to relax and focus you into a meditative state. Here’s how they explain it:

Duality

Everything we experience here within this plane of existence reveals the presence of duality. Light and dark. Movement and stillness. Sound and silence. Up and down. Matter and void. This is what the Chinese referred to as the Yin and Yang Principle. It is from the dynamic movement between these opposites that expresses the force of creation.

Resonance

If we examine matter minutely, that is, if we go far enough down to an atomic level, scientists tell us that everything we see here in our three dimensional existence, is vibration. Essentially nothing is solid. And further, that everything vibrates to an exact frequency or resonance. Resonance, by its very nature, operates on the principle of mutual attraction. In other words, like attracts like.

For instance, if one plucks the D string on a harp, all of the other D strings upon that harp, or even others nearby, will vibrate in resonance to it. The same principle applies to humans and is why we connect with certain individuals over others. Those people are simply of a similar vibrational frequency.

The dance between the polar opposites, the yin and yang, is what causes us to be able to differentiate between the polarized forces, and causes creation to happen. These energies are constantly overtaking the other and then seeking to regain equilibrium, harmony and balance.

Healing

However, when we experience trauma or get out of alignment with who we truly are by trying to fit ourselves into the rigid molds of society or familial expectations for example, our resonance or frequency can become low, too fast or stagnated. All of these conditions may cause a state of imbalance and can provoke blockages in our energetic body.

One of the approaches to vibrational healing is to mimic that imbalance within the vibrational resonance of the body and so stimulate the necessary energy flow towards healing. A sort of waking up of the awareness within the body in order to gently nudge its system into a healing mode. This is what the healing modes of Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Polarity Therapy, and Sound and Vibrational therapies, to mention a few, are based upon.

Using vibration as a means of gaining the body’s equilibrium is a non-invasive energy healing that can fundamentally change the body’s molecular structure and return it to the natural state, of harmony.

The Curious Skeptic’s Corner

I love this chair, and I also like knowing what’s solid and what’s speculation. So, for the record:

  • The sound and vibration part has real research behind it. “Vibroacoustic therapy,” developed by the Norwegian therapist Olav Skille in the 1980s, uses low-frequency sound felt through the body. Small studies have found it can help with relaxation, anxiety and some kinds of pain.
  • The harp example is real physics, with a twist. Sympathetic resonance is genuine: a plucked string sets nearby strings tuned to the same note, or a related one, humming along. But resonance is about sharing a frequency, not about things attracting each other, and it isn’t how people find their friends.
  • Some claims go beyond the evidence. There’s no good scientific evidence that a magnetic field changes the nervous system this way, or that vibration “changes the body’s molecular structure.” And homeopathy has not held up in rigorous testing.

None of that changes what I feel when I settle in and let the music do its work. Deep relaxation is real, whatever the explanation turns out to be.

Needless to say, I’m excited to experiment with,
and experience, this amazing machine!
