On the surface, it's a universal American soldier's perspective; underneath, in a Black-history lens, it highlights the irony and resolve of Black citizens fighting for a country that did not fully fight for them.

That tension — deep love for home and country alongside a demand for equal treatment — is a central theme of Black participation in WWII and later civil rights struggles, making a song like this a useful window into how Black performers navigated patriotism, race, and hope.

This song was also featured at the end of season two of the Amazon Prime series entitled "Fallout" based upon a computer game released by Interplay in 1997. A great game, an excellent video iteration and a song with deep meaning and context, especially as we approach America's 250th birthday.

I saw a peaceful old valley

With a carpet of corn for a floor

And I heard a voice within me whisper

"This is worth fighting for"

I saw a little old cabin

And the river that flowed by the door

And I heard a voice within me whisper

"This is worth fighting for"

Didn't I build that cabin?

Didn't I plant that corn?

Didn't my folks before me

Fight for this country before I was born?

I gathered my loved ones around me

And I gazed at each face I adore

And I heard that voice within me thunder

"This is worth fighting for"

The other day, we passed through a little old valley

Had a carpet of corn for a floor

And it seemed there was somethin'

Way down inside of me kept sayin'

"Son, that's worth fightin' for"

Little further along, we passed an old dilapidated cabin

One of them kind with old man river flowin' right by the door

Seemed like this thing down inside of me kept on sayin'

"Son, that's worth fightin' for"

So I got to thinkin'

Didn't I help to build that cabin?

And didn't I help to plant that corn?

And didn't my folks way yonder before me

Fight for this country way before I was born?

I gathered my loved ones around me

And I gazed at each face I adore

And I heard that voice within me thunder

"This is worth fighting for"
